The Tamil clock traditionally divides the day and night into eight equal parts, known as “kālam.” Each kālam is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes in duration. The timing of these kālams may vary based on the geographical location and cultural practices. The starting point of the Tamil clock is typically measured from the sunrise or sunset, depending on the region.
In addition to the kālam divisions, the Tamil clock also includes further subdivisions such as “nāzhigai,” which divides each kālam into 24 equal parts, and “muhoortham,” which divides each nāzhigai into 2.5 parts. These subdivisions are used for more precise time measurements, particularly for auspicious and astrological purposes.
